Controversies in Stroke Management

Course Objectives:
This CME-certified monograph is intended for: Physicians who manage patients following an acute stroke (including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-intensivists, neurointerventional radiologists, and vascular surgeons). Physicians who manage blood pressure in critically ill neurologic patients (including intensivists and any other physician who manages patients in the critical care setting). Emergency physicians who initially manage patients following an acute stroke.

Upon completing this activity, you should be able to:

  • Better understand the benefits of surgical intervention in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.
  • Utilize current blood pressure management strategies with parenteral anti-hypertensive treatment options to optimally manage the patient with stroke.
  • Understand the role of both intravenous and intra-arterial thrombolysis and utilize as clinically indicated in the management of the patient with ischemic stroke.
  • Understand and utilize current patient assessment tools such as PET in the diagnosis and management of the patient with stroke.
  • Understand the need for accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment benefits afforded by early identification of the penumbra in the patient with ischemic stroke.
